Frequently asked questions

What is Stump Grinding?

Stump grinders, specialized tools or machines designed to grind tree stumps into smaller pieces, are a hybrid of a circular saw and a lawnmower. Utilizing a rotating blade, these devices effectively gnaw at leftover stumps protruding from the ground, eliminating them with a powerful ripping action. The sharp teeth of the grinder cut away the wood, reducing it to fine chips, and can even reach beneath ground level for complete removal, erasing unsightly remnants from your lawn.

Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal

Stump removal and stump grinding are often confused, yet they differ significantly in process, results, power usage, and agents employed. Stump grinding entails mechanically cutting and excavating the stump to the desired height, leaving behind sawdust that integrates into the soil. Conversely, stump removal involves uprooting the stump using force and chemicals, leaving a messy aftermath. Stump grinding solely employs blade machines, while stump removal necessitates the use of high-concentration potassium nitrate to decompose the stump before uprooting with force. While burning a stump or attempting DIY removal may seem viable, professional services are preferred due to the extensive tools, energy, and time investment required, although it's important to note that professional removal typically incurs higher costs than grinding alone.

What about the roots?

Stump grinding does not entirely remove the roots of a tree. A grinder goes around 1 foot underground during the grinding process. But that’s not enough to destroy the roots of a tree. That’s because roots can be extensively spread out beneath the ground.

So even after grinding a stump, chances are some roots will still be left behind. Sometimes, the roots may take time to disintegrate. So, don’t be surprised if you see sprouts or regrowth from the hidden roots after the grinding process has been completed.

To remove roots, additional steps have to be taken, which is not recommended if you don’t want to put in extra effort or kill the tree roots. However, if the tree has been infected with disease, it’s best to dispose of the roots. That’s because this infection can kill the roots of trees anyway.

How to measure

The short answer is it depends on a few factors; stump size, location, species, ground type (ie. rocky ground and steep slopes), surface roots and

level of cleanup can affect the pricing. We have a basic formula taking into account a cost per linear inch which can give a rough idea of costs without needing a site visit. Additional costs can be incurred for chasing surface roots beyond the stump and is typically quoted as a second line item. We can provide full cleanup of wood chips/ mulch and debris and provide clearly defined pricing for this service. When comparing cost per inch between companies it is important to consider if surface root chasing, cleanup and rehabilitation of the site are included in all quotes.

How We Measure?

Measurements are taken with the root flare and mounding as per the photo below. Please note that if the ground is determined to be extremely rocky an additional charge may be be determined suitable due to the added wear and damage to stump grinding teeth.
